Deze fase wordt gekenmerkt door een daling van de hormonen oestrogeen en progesteron, wat leidt tot verschillende lichamelijke en emotionele veranderingen. Symptomen kunnen onder andere opvliegers, nachtelijk zweten, stemmingswisselingen, gewichtstoename en een vermindering van de botdichtheid omvatten. De overgang kan enkele jaren duren en markeert het einde van de vruchtbare periode van een vrouw.
